What brought the Vatican banker to his macabre end at the opening of the secret passage that led to Shakespeare's lodging? Readers of the 2004 book Secret Shakespeare know that even when the Bard was its owner, the Blackfriars Gatehouse was a hiding place for Catholic priests, who were smuggled in and out through a maze of 'stairs and vaults, which, through long and lazy windings', descended to the Thames. (2) Yet neither the inquest that judged the death a suicide, nor the 1991 inquiry that found Mafioso Frankie 'the Strangler' di Carlo the killer, considered the Shakespeare link that offers a key to the P2 fraternity, and sheds light on the darkest deeds of post-war Italy. Not even Jeff Kratz, of the New York detective agency Kroll Associates, hired by Calvi's family, grasped the Shakespeare connection. But one person who thinks he knows what took the Milanese financier to Blackfriars is a current resident of an apartment on the site, the Shakespeare scholar Will Richardson. He is convinced the answer to the Calvi mystery is also the solution to the Shakespeare enigma, and that proof of this coincidence lies in the fact that the bricks on the body of the hanged banker left a gaping hole in the foundations of the Gatehouse.
