Introduction

What is Download Festival?

Download Festival is a British-created rock festival that was conceived as a follow up to the Monsters of Rock festivals that had been held at the Donington Park circuit between 1980 and 1996. The first Download Festival was created by Stuart Galbraith and co-booked by Andy Copping in 2003 in the same location. [^1] [^2] [^3]

Download Festival is known for hosting some of the genre's biggest names, including Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Slipknot, Metallica, Linkin Park, Korn, Soundgarden, Motörhead, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Kiss, Judas Priest, Rammstein, Status Quo, Mötley Crüe, Journey, ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Faith No More and Guns N' Roses.

Download Festival is not only about music, but also about entertainment and community. When and where was Download 2019?

Download 2019 took place from Friday 14 June to Sunday 16 June at Donington Park in Leicestershire, England. It was the 17th edition of the festival and the 15th to be held at Donington Park. The festival attracted over 100,000 fans from all over the world.

The festival site was divided into two main areas: the arena and the campsite. The arena was where all the stages and attractions were located, while the campsite was where the fans could pitch their tents and enjoy various facilities and services. The arena had four stages: the Main Stage, which hosted the headliners and main acts; the Zippo Encore Stage, which featured alternative and emerging bands; the Avalanche Stage, which showcased punk and hardcore bands; and the Dogtooth Stage, which presented metal and extreme bands. The arena also had other attractions such as WWE NXT UK Live!, The SINDROME (a circus-themed area with death metal puppets, medieval mayhem and more), Mind The Dog (a mindfulness programme in The Doghouse), food stalls, bars and merchandise stands.

The campsite had five zones: standard camping (the cheapest option), quiet camping (for those who wanted a peaceful night), eco camping (for those who wanted to reduce their environmental impact), RIP camping (the premium option with extra facilities) and accessible camping (for those with disabilities). The campsite also had various amenities such as showers, toilets, lockers, charging points, water points, supermarkets and entertainment venues. [^ Who were the headliners and main acts?

The headliners of Download 2019 were Def Leppard, Slipknot and Tool, three legendary bands that have influenced generations of rock and metal fans. Def Leppard headlined the Main Stage on Friday, Slipknot on Saturday and Tool on Sunday. Each of them delivered a spectacular show that left the crowd in awe.

Def Leppard played their classic album Hysteria in full, as well as some of their other hits such as Let's Get Rocked, Rock of Ages and Pour Some Sugar on Me. Slipknot unleashed their fury with songs from their upcoming album We Are Not Your Kind, as well as classics such as Wait and Bleed, Psychosocial and Duality. Tool mesmerised the audience with their progressive and psychedelic sound, playing songs from their long-awaited album Fear Inoculum, as well as classics such as Schism, Vicarious and Ænema.

But the headliners were not the only ones who rocked the Main Stage. Some of the other acts that performed on the Main Stage were Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, Whitesnake, Rob Zombie, Die Antwoord, Smashing Pumpkins, Trivium, Halestorm, Lamb of God, Amon Amarth and Dream Theater. Each of them brought their own style and energy to the stage, making it a diverse and exciting lineup.

Highlights of Download 2019

Def Leppard's historic performance

One of the highlights of Download 2019 was Def Leppard's historic performance of their album Hysteria in full. Hysteria is one of the best-selling albums of all time, with over 25 million copies sold worldwide. It contains some of the band's most iconic songs, such as Animal, Love Bites, Armageddon It and Hysteria.

Def Leppard's performance was a special treat for the fans, as it was the first time they played Hysteria in full in the UK. The band also celebrated the 40th anniversary of their first EP release at Download 2019. The band's frontman Joe Elliott said: "We are delighted to be going back to headline Download in 2019! The festival has a very special place in our hearts and its such a great place to play. We will be playing Hysteria in full yes, in full! plus a load more of the hits, and we are going to put on a very special show for our UK fans. Cant wait to see you all there!"

Slipknot's fiery show

Another highlight of Download 2019 was Slipknot's fiery show on Saturday night. The masked metal band from Iowa returned to Download after five years with a new look and a new album. They played six songs from their upcoming album We Are Not Your Kind, which was released in August 2019. The songs were Unsainted, All Out Life, Nero Forte, Birth of the Cruel, Solway Firth and Red Flag.

Slipknot's show was a visual spectacle that featured pyrotechnics, fireworks, flames and explosions. The band also had a new stage set-up that included rotating drums, hydraulic lifts and a giant devil horned goat head. The band's vocalist Corey Taylor said: "Weve been waiting a long time for this. Five years ago we played this festival and we didnt know what was happening next. Tonight were here to show you what happens next." Tool's triumphant return

A third highlight of Download 2019 was Tool's triumphant return to the festival after 12 years. The progressive metal band from Los Angeles had not released a new album since 2006's 10,000 Days, but they had been working on their fifth album, Fear Inoculum, which was released in August 2019. Tool played four songs from their new album at Download 2019: Fear Inoculum, Invincible, Descending and 7empest.

Tool's show was a sonic and visual masterpiece that captivated the audience with their complex and intricate music, their stunning light show and their psychedelic video projections. The band's vocalist Maynard James Keenan said: "Thank you for your patience. We hope you enjoy the new material." The fans responded with cheers and applause, showing their appreciation for the band's long-awaited comeback.

Slayer's farewell to UK fans

A fourth highlight of Download 2019 was Slayer's farewell to UK fans, as part of their final world tour. The thrash metal pioneers from California had announced in 2018 that they would retire from touring after 37 years of career, and Download 2019 was their last UK show ever. Slayer played a setlist that spanned their entire discography, from their debut album Show No Mercy (1983) to their latest album Repentless (2015). Some of the songs they played were Raining Blood, Angel of Death, Seasons in the Abyss, South of Heaven and Hell Awaits.

Slayer's show was a brutal and intense display of speed, aggression and power that left the crowd breathless. The band also had a massive pyro show that added to the atmosphere of chaos and destruction. The band's guitarist Kerry King said: "This is our last time in England. Thank you for being here with us." The fans responded with chants of "Slayer! Slayer! Slayer!" and gave the band a standing ovation. Other memorable moments
